55. loving work!

Like mentioned earlier, Jeanne, the designer I'm interning for, is working on a presentation for a hallway in a showhouse. This week I've been sketching suggestions for design, researching wall-papers, lamps and carpets, working lots in AutoCad to figure out proportions and finally now drawing out and rendering plan and elevations. I'll post my drawings when they're done.

Today, as it's Saturday, I had the day off. I was supposed to meet a friend, but around noon I suddenly got really ill! I hung over the toilet, throwing up for two hours, before passing out on the floor. I woke up a few hours later, somehow in my bed, and felt fine. But the thing is, when I get ill, I turn into a guy. I feel so sorry for myself, I might as well had an amputation. So I went to the store and got pizza, strawberries and (regular) coke and I've been sitting here ever since.

54. First day at work

I got up around eight, had a quick shower, got my stuff and went straight to the little breakfast place right around the corner for a coffee. It's the cutest little place where people sit by the bar eating their egg and bacon and watching the news. With energy in a cup I headed to the studio. Jeanne showed me some of the catalogues she got when she was at this huge designer fair over the weekend. There's so much inspiring stuff out there. She totally knows the things I need to learn. She is considering taking on a room or two in this show house, which, from what I understood, is a charity project where designers donate work and refurbish a house before it's put on the market. So she showed me her ideas and gave me the task of developing them. I had to figure out the specs of a wallpaper she had seen, which took me like 11 phone calls, and I got to practise my sketching skills drawing up suggestions of how to space some columns etc. I'm also learning AutoCad, which is probably one the most valuable things I'll learn during this internship. As well as seriously getting to practise my sketching skills. I'm starting to understand the importance of good elevations..

Anyways, so at 6 we left the office to go to this ASID (American Association of Interior Designers) event where they were screening a documentary on Ray and Charles Eames (yes, I put Ray's name first on purpose). There were lots of designers there and all the free alcohol you could drink. The movie was great too. You've gotta admire the way Ray stuck by Charles all those years, despite his escapades, and nurtured their child, which was the amazing world they'd created within their studio. I'm a feminist in the way that I believe that it should be just as natural for a woman to make her way in the professional (and personal) world as a man. A guy can be ugly, and even fat, and still be recoginsed for his work. A woman can barely get noticed unless she's pretty to look at. I'm not going to go further into this now though. Have a good nite:)

53. My first day in Boston

My first day in Boston was full of first impressions, meeting new people and seeing totally American things. Beautiful Jeanne picked me up at the airport and took me on a mini tour around Charlestown before we got lattes at a little coffe shop and headed to their absolutely amazing studio. And when I say amazing, people, I mean. amazing. It's called Stove Factory Studio's and is filled with great artists. It even has a gallery on the first floor where they show their work. It used to be a stove factory many years ago and totally looks like it. It's an old, red brick building with huge windows. Just like in the movies..

One of the talented people who's studio is there, is Marcia Crumley. Marcia and her husband Scot are good friends of Jeanne and Bill and offered me to stay with them while I was in Boston. I'm basically the luckiest person alive. They even let me alone in their house over the weekend. I arrived on Thursday and they left on Friday.

I need to go to bed now cause I'm getting up to go to work in a few hours, but I can't wait to share pictures and write more about my life as an intern in a private, American top notch interior design and architecture studio.

52. interview

My school made a short profile thing on me as I got the internship while I was still in my first year. There will also be a travel letter posted in a weeks time! So much more motivated to update the blog and stuff when I know I'll be able to share it with more people.

51. Jet lagged

I've spent three days in a jet lagged zombie state. Walking around Charlestown is seriously like being on a movie set. Today I plan on visiting the Museum of Fine Art and the Institute of Contemporary art. And tomorrow is my first day at work! Can't wait!
